Help getting Brother MFC-495CW to scan

I am asking for some help in getting my Brother MFC-495CW MFP to perform scanning. It is hardwired to my router with a static IP address. I have been able to get it to print with no problems. I have downloaded the install script from Brother’s website and run it entering the IP address of my printer and no scanner is recognized by simple-scan or scanimage -L.

I then tried downloading the appropriate RPM brscan3-0.2.13-1.x86_64.rpm, and executed it with:

sudo rpm -ihv --nodeps brscan3-0.2.13-1.x86_64.rpm

I then tried solutions from the following sites

These included creating softlinks to various other driver files:

I then added my user to the scanners user group with (replacing {my_username} with my username):

sudo usermod -a -G scanner {my_username}

I then edited /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules and added the following lines before LABEL=“libsane_rules_end”

#Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}==“04f9”, ENV{libsane_matched}=“yes”

I then tried to add the brother3 backend to Sane’s external driver list as noted by @btwarden in Scanner not recognized, part 2 - #2 by Chris_K

sudo mkdir -p /etc/sane.d/dll.d/
echo brother3 | sudo tee /etc/sane.d/dll.d/brother3

Despite all of this brsaneconfig3 can ping the scanner, but simplescan and scanimage -L still to not find a scanner, even when run with sudo.

Here is the result of brsaneconfig3 -d. I masked the ip address of the printer, but it is correct.

It’s still not a simple process, but I made this change a while back to at least make it possible to manually copy 3rd party sane drivers under /usr/local/lib64/sane, where they won’t be overwritten by swupd:

I have a brother MFC printer/scanner, and I have the scanner setup to scan to a samba share. This means there’s no drivers involved and the scans upload automatically. This may be significantly easier and trivial to use, and worth considering.

Thank you @btwarden. I will give your suggestion a try and make sure I copy the files over. If I am unable to get it to work, I will try @ahkok’s suggestion about a samba share. Speaking of which, I am not familiar with samba at all or how to get a scanner to scan to a samba share. Any pointers or suggestions for resources to get me started out?

I don’t know about the 49xx printer/scanner, but my scanner has an LCD screen where I can select “Scan” and then “Scan to network”. In the web frontend of the printer, I can configure it to log on a samba share. On my local network, I have a share where the printer has its own login and can upload scans to the samba share, and various computers on my network can see the Samba share.

Setting up a samba share is relatively simple, there are hundreds of guides on the internet, one just has to google for it.

Just as a followup…
Sadly my printer/scanner is apparently too old to scan to a samba share. It required the daemon to be installed on a machine so the scanner could detect that machine if planning to initiate a scan from the scanner.

I decided to try VueScan from the FlatHub repo as it states that it has it’s own built in drivers. It works flawlessly. Detected my scanner right on starting it up.
