[SOLVED] Firefox keep crashing when playing Youtube video

Hello!
My laptop is Lenovo Idepad 110-14st running AMD A9 9400 with 8GB of RAM.
Installed latest CL on my SSD and Firefox 76.0.1 crash suddenly when I try to playing any Youtube videos.
Already done this

but still crash anyway.
i’m running Plasma 5.18.5, but the issue persist on GNOME and live iso also.
Any further help is greatly appreciated.

Update:
I managed to install Brave Browser and Youtube video plays seamlessly. But Firefox still crashing when playing Youtube videos.

Hello @nair.
Did you try running Firefox from the Terminal to see if Firefox prints some error when it crashes? Not sure if there is another way to check for errors.
Does it only crashes when playing videos on Youtube?

Hi @stefano !
I tried to running Firefox from terminal and nothing comes up when the Youtube-video-crash happened. I don’t know how to debug Firefox either.
Yes, it crashes only when playing Youtube videos. Others task seems fine, at least until now.
As for now, I use Brave to playing Youtube videos. Also, I tried Eolie, but it runs slow and laggy compared to Brave.
Should I mark this thread solved then? Since my main concern is playing Youtube videos, and I can play it through Brave.

You could give this option a try :

Okay. Sadly, I don’t have any ideas what it could be the cause for the crash.
Maybe it is a good idea to leave the thread open to see if anyone else in the future figures out the cause of the crash?

Okay! I’ll leave the thread open then.
Anyway, I recorded my screen to show you how the crash is going.
Here is the Firefox crash, also with VLC Extension from @Businux

And here is Youtube from Brave just to show you the differences.

NB:
The crash persist on GNOME DE also.

This report also contains technical information about the state of the application when it crashed.

As for the VLC Extension error, I think I put the path wrong. I could not locate VLC in /bin anyway.

Thank you for the information.

I found a recent unresolved issue similar to yours: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/firefox-tabs-keep-crashing-on-new-install-thinking-its-video-driver-related-but-unsure-how-to-proceed/139703
The setup seems to be the same: Firefox, KDE and AMD GPU.

Based on that thread, I have a few ideas about what to try, but I’m not sure about it and I don’t want to waste your time

Much thanks!
I’m gonna looking for it tho.

But anyway, as far as I’m remember, I tried to live boot into my friend’s Lenovo Z480 (it is an Intel one), using the same USB drive with the same CL live iso that deployed on my laptop and I can’t reproduce the same error with Firefox.

NB:
I use Elementary OS Hera, Kubuntu 20.04 and Slackware before I jumped into Clear Linux. And I clearly remember never found same issue once. :grinning: . Ah yes, I used Manjaro once, but only with i3wm, never with actual DE on Manjaro.
Though I had some screen rendering issue with Elementary OS. Screen flickering and glitch sometimes. But when I change to Plasma on Kubuntu, the issue was gone.

I hope you can figure it out :crossed_fingers:

I guess you can’t reproduce it with the live iso because when you install KDE a lot of things are changed in the system, I think.

I have never had that issue either.

Nah, the thing is, actually the crash happens even when I tried the live iso in my laptop :grinning:
Are you using AMD too?
Maybe you’re right, it’s a hardware related issue.
Gonna tinkering in about:config for a while, maybe got something.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you before.

No, my PC has everything Intel. I built it with Clear Linux in mind

Based on the other issue I shared, I guess that is the cause.

Good luck!

I think you can blame it on me. I know I have bad English :grinning:
Anyway, gonna try the latest CL iso and live boot on my brother’s old Intel i3 2330M, (I think CL support Sandy line up though).

“No, my PC has everything Intel. I built it with Clear Linux in mind”

Well, that’s dope tho :grinning:

Gonna tinkering in about:config for a while, maybe got something.

Tried to change some stuffs, but I think I’m gonna stick to Brave for now :grinning:
Btw, I’m using Firefox from CL’s bundle, not the Firefox flatpak.

Thanks for your help anyway, really appreciate it!

Update:
Ah, even the Left4Dead2 intro video on Steam got crashed. Both when entering the game, and the scene before you play particular level. I managed to enter the game with -novid, but no hope when enters the level.

I already tried the same iso that deployed to my laptop into my brother’s Intel i3 2330M laptop, and live boot there.
The issue I mentioned earlier didn’t happen at all. Firefox plays Youtube video just fine, no single crash happen.
I think it is safe to assume that the cause of that problem was related to my hardware.
I’m planning to deploy CL to my brother’s laptop tho, to see if the issue came to the surface by any chance.

For now, the best I can do is using Brave to play Youtube videos.
Big thanks for all! :slightly_smiling_face:

My English isn’t great either, so we have two problems

I’m glad to hear that. Maybe it’s the amd gpu driver the cause of the crash.

You’re welcome! I wish I had a better a answer though

Yours is much better then mine I guess :grinning:
I think the latter is not a problem, it’s a challenge

Got any idea which bundles contains some drivers to enhance the gpu driver?
I know they patched the driver into the kernel, just curious tho

Well, its all okay :grinning:

There is an open source driver for Amd and one that is not open source. I don’t know which one you have installed. But maybe you can try both to see if the problem is with one of them.
There is enough information here, I think: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU

Found this from lshw btw.
