What Is the Current State of Driver Support for Intel Arc GPUs on Clear Linux?

Hello Clear Linux Community,

I hope everyone is doing well. I wanted to start a detailed discussion regarding the current state of driver support for Intel Arc GPUs on Clear Linux. As many of us are aware, Intel’s Arc series is their new line of discrete GPUs, and there is quite a buzz around their potential and performance. However, the integration of new hardware often comes with challenges, especially in the Linux ecosystem. Here, I’d like to delve into several aspects and hear from the community about their experiences, insights, and advice.

Intel’s Arc GPUs are designed to compete with established players like NVIDIA and AMD in the discrete GPU market. They promise significant performance improvements and are targeted at various segments, from gaming to professional workloads. With features like ray tracing, AI-driven upscaling, and robust hardware acceleration, they are an exciting addition to the GPU landscape.

Here are some key points I’d like to discuss:

1. Current Driver Availability

  • Official Drivers: Are there official drivers available for Intel Arc GPUs on Clear Linux? If so, where can they be downloaded from, and what is the installation process like?
  • Open Source Drivers: Is there any ongoing development for open-source drivers for Intel Arc GPUs? How do they compare to the proprietary ones in terms of performance and stability?

2. Installation and Configuration

  • Installation Guides: Has anyone successfully installed Intel Arc GPU drivers on Clear Linux? Could you share a detailed step-by-step guide, including any necessary configurations?
  • Kernel Requirements: Are there specific kernel versions required for optimal driver support? Any particular configurations or patches needed?

3. Performance and Stability

  • Benchmarking: How do Intel Arc GPUs perform on Clear Linux? Are there any benchmarks available that compare their performance to other GPUs on the same platform?
  • Stability: What has been the community’s experience regarding the stability of Intel Arc GPUs with Clear Linux? Are there frequent crashes, graphical glitches, or other issues?

4. Gaming and Professional Workloads

  • Gaming: For those using Clear Linux for gaming, how well do Intel Arc GPUs handle popular titles? Are there any specific tweaks or settings required to get the best performance?
  • Content Creation: How do Intel Arc GPUs perform in content creation tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, etc.? Any recommended software that pairs well with these GPUs on Clear Linux?

Intel Arc GPU hold great promise, their seamless integration into the Clear Linux ecosystem requires robust driver support and active community engagement. I hope this thread serves as a comprehensive resource for anyone looking to use Intel Arc GPUs on Clear Linux. Let’s collaborate, share our experiences, and help each other in making the most out of this exciting new hardware.

Looking forward to your insights, experiences, and contributions.

Intel does not have proprietary drivers for ARC graphics for Linux-- we’re an open source first company in this regard

Clear Linux ships a very recent set of these included in the releases (my own machine has an ARC gpu so I know it works
