Darktable version parameter

As an end user, I would find this confusing:

darktable --version
this is darktable archive-c3b900172e0fe88fc6c47050983bd97bcea994a0
copyright (c) 2009-2019 johannes hanika
darktable-dev@lists.darktable.org

is it 2.x? is it 3.x beta? etc.

Same information in the GUI, left side under the logo.

Is this the from the product or a result from the clear linux build process?

sort of.

darktable is building from master. Once 3.0.0 is released, this goes away.
