Dropping Ultimaker Cura from Clear Linux

Almost 4 years ago, we added Ultimaker Cura, a popular slicer suite for 3D printing, in the maker-3dprinting bundle. Due to significant changes in the build process for the 5.x series, however, we’re no longer able to build and package Cura with Clear Linux’ optimizations. Fedora, Ubuntu, and Gentoo have also not been able to get to the 5.x series yet.

We’ll be removing Cura 4.13.1 and its dependencies from Clear Linux in the near future. Instead, you can download the AppImage directly from Ultimaker’s Cura release site.

It’s been just over 6 months since I posted this warning. Recent updates to other core components have made the 4.x versions of Cura’s libraries unable to build in our environment. As mentioned above, the 5.x series switches to a completely different build process that’s handy for developers, but nearly impossible for packagers like us. As above, we recommend that you download the AppImage directly from Ultimaker’s Cura release site.

Cura will disappear from bundles (and installed systems) within the next couple of Clear Linux releases.
