NAS suggestion: CL-based or TrueNAS

Looking to build me an NVMe-only NAS. Can CL server be used for this purpose (with what bundles?), or should I go the TrueNAS route? Would it be too complicated to customize CL as a NAS?

What do you guys think?

I’m sure you could use Clear Linux for that purpose, but if you’re looking for a dedicated NAS, I’d go the TrueNAS route. Tools for the job! I run a Synology NAS in addition to the pile of NUCs I have Clear installed on.

Just to lend perspective - I’m running a NAS on Clear Linux with bcachefs - due to how new the filesystem is, you likely won’t find any non-rolling release distros with new enough kernels to utilize it.

But there’s not fancy Web UIs or anything like that. bcachefs, NFS, samba file sharing, etc. are all managed either manually or via scripts, so there’s a bit more of a skill ceiling
