I want Assistance with Performance Degradation on Clear Linux

Hello there,

I am experiencing some performance issues with my Clear Linux installation and hope someone here might be able to offer some guidance.

I have Intel Core i7 10700K, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, RAM 16GB DDR4, Storage 1TB
I have noticed that my system has become notably sluggish, particularly when performing tasks such as video editing with Kdenlive and running multiple browser tabs with Firefox; The system sometimes stutters or freezes momentarily when switching between applications.

These performance issues have started affecting my productivity, as tasks that used to run smoothly are now quite cumbersome.

Also I have ensured that my system is fully updated using swupd update; I have monitored system resources using htop and iostat but there do not seem to be any obvious bottlenecks in CPU or disk usage; I have checked system logs using journalctl but I have not identified any critical errors or warnings that correlate with the performance drops.
Also I have check https://community.clearlinux.org/t/clear-linux-os-offering-performance-advantages-even-with-low-power-iot-edge-hardware-mendix/ still i need your advice

Has anyone experienced similar issues or have suggestions for diagnosing or improving performance?

Thank you for your time and assistance :slightly_smiling_face:

Have you run swupd diagnose?

My first thought would be RAM usage, and swapping memory to disk if you’ve got multiple tabs open while video editing.
If it doesn’t happen with a very small/short video, but happens on a large/long video, then it’s probably that. Either buy more RAM, or expect less from your computer (ie close Firefox when doing video editing). Every hardware configuration has limits, and stuttering/freezing while switching apps sounds like swapping as the OS reads back RAM that was dumped to disk.
If you can demonstrate that it happens regardless of memory usage, let us know that too.
If it is swapping, you can look at vm.swappiness, but more RAM is a better solution.

I had a bad liquid coolant for the cpu go bad, cpu overheating seemed to spike randomly. sensor app may help you keep on eye on core temp. Another tip is make sure your nvidia driver is actually loaded and in use. Sometimes an update can break things like nvidia.
