Disk encryption passphrase - nothing happens

New install of Clear OS. FOUR TIMES.
Disk encryption set up, no “funny characters”, just letters and numbers. On restart the passphrase entry does absolutely nothing. It just sits there blinking at me.
I really would like to use Clear OS but this is currently a big no no.
Can anyone suggest why the passphrase entry does absolutely nothing?
