GParted: Cannot resize Fat32 FS

I’m trying to resize a Fat32 filesystem on a SSD. I installed GParted and verified the the bundles it needs are installed (dosfstools and storage-utils). However, GParted still won’t let me change the size of the partition, giving me this warning in the Information dialog.

Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable.
The cause might be a missing software package.
The following list of software packages is required for fat32 file system support: dosfstools, mtools.

What’s going on here, why does GParted not recognize that it has what it needs?

No idea what went wrong, but, we can try and figure it out. Perhaps it needs a less common tool or something nonstandard at run time, and it isn’t easy to find out what this is.

Can you tell me what command you used to create the partition, and the command you’re attempting to use to resize it? Together with those, perhaps we can reproduce this and see what, under the hood of gparted, and ideally parted itself, is going wrong or is missing.

I had a quick try with a USB flash drive with no issues, resizing (shrink / grow)…delete…repartitioning, work fine here. Maybe a corrupt file system?
